Below are 3–7 day add-on itineraries you can use before or after your river trip. Each one is written to work in either direction, just reverse the days.
If you’re traveling to the Middle Fork of the Salmon River with us, you’re already coming to one of the most spectacular corners of the West—so it makes sense to turn your river trip into a full Central Idaho vacation.
The best part: our trips start and stop in Stanley, Idaho, which places you right at the doorway to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and within easy reach of Sun Valley/Ketchum for a softer landing (think: great meals, galleries, spas, and a truly comfortable bed).
Quick trip anchors (so your add-on fits our river schedule)
To make planning simple, here are the timing details we recommend building around:
- Orientation meeting: 6:30 PM the evening before your launch date (Stanley)
- Morning departure: 8:00 AM on launch day (Stanley)
- Return to Stanley: typically around 5 PM (give or take an hour) on the last day; many guests choose to stay in Stanley that night and travel the next morning
Planning tip: If your add-on is before the river, aim to be in Stanley by late afternoon on the day before launch so you can settle in, eat well, and arrive relaxed for orientation.
Why Sawtooths + Sun Valley is the perfect pairing
The Sawtooths: big wilderness energy, close to Stanley
The Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) covers 756,000 acres, includes three wilderness areas, and features 700+ miles of trails, 40 peaks over 10,000 feet, and 300+ alpine lakes—which is exactly why people fall in love with this place so quickly.
Sun Valley & Ketchum: comfort, culture, and a real “reset”
Referencing Visit Sun Valley, Ketchum and Sun Valley are only a couple miles apart; Ketchum is where most hotels, restaurants, and shops are, while Sun Valley Village is known for resort-style amenities (lodging, dining, pools, golf, etc.).
The drive between them is part of the fun
The Sawtooth Scenic Byway connects this region with mountain views and easy pull-offs. Idaho tourism describes it as 116 miles (roughly 2 hours, 16 minutes end-to-end, depending on stops/conditions). And from Sun Valley/Ketchum, Stanley is commonly treated as a scenic ~1-hour day trip.
Choose your “add-on style” (so you don’t overpack your days)
Before you pick an itinerary, decide what you want your extra days to feel like:
- Soft landing before the river: Sun Valley first (nice sleep, great food, easy walks, low stress).
- Wilderness immersion: Sawtooths first (lakes, hikes, starry nights, early-to-bed rhythm).
- Recovery after the river: Sun Valley after (spa + patio dinners + slow mornings).
- Family-friendly: short hikes, hatchery visit, lake day, bike path, museums.
- Big adventure: longer hikes (Sawtooth Lake), extra scenic byway mileage, sunrise/sunset chasing.
3-Day Itinerary: “Sun Valley Warm-Up + Stanley Launch Night”
Best for: minimal extra PTO, flying in/out of Sun Valley area, first-timers who want a low-stress start
Works best as: pre-trip (but you can reverse it for post-trip)
Day 1: Arrive in Sun Valley/Ketchum, settle in
Do:
- Check into your hotel, shake out travel fatigue, and take an easy walk through town.
- If you want culture right away, the Sun Valley Museum of Art is a strong first stop; admission is noted as free, and it’s right in Ketchum.
Why we like this day: it keeps you fresh. No big hikes yet.
Day 2: Easy valley adventure: bike path + optional gondola dining
Option A (light adventure):
- Ride or walk part of the Wood River Trail, a 20+ mile paved, year-round path connecting Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum, and Sun Valley.
Option B (signature “Sun Valley” experience):
- Reserve a meal at The Roundhouse (on Bald Mountain). Access involves gondola logistics; the resort notes that a foot traffic pass is required for lunch reservations.
Day 3: Scenic drive to Stanley + Sawtooths primer + orientation
Morning: Drive to Stanley via the Sawtooth corridor (allow time for photo stops).
Afternoon:
- Quick lake stop or short walk near Stanley—keep it easy so you’re rested.
Evening:
- Join us for 6:30 PM orientation in Stanley.
Local reality: summer lodging in Stanley fills quickly; we recommend booking early.
4-Day Itinerary: Sawtooth Lakes + Sun Valley Comfort
Best for: one real hike + one real “town day”
Works as: pre- or post-trip (reverse it)
Day 1: Arrive Stanley (gateway to the Sawtooths)
Stanley is famously small and sits at 6,400 feet elevation. Arriving a bit early helps you acclimate and sleep well.
Easy afternoon ideas: scenic drive, lakeside picnic, early dinner.
Day 2: A “choose-your-own” Sawtooths day (easy to moderate)
Pick one:
- Redfish Lake area: Redfish is one of the most iconic alpine-lake zones in the SNRA. The Forest Service maintains extensive recreation sites around the lake (campgrounds, day use, etc.).
- Visitor center + naturalist programs: The Redfish Lake Visitor Center is managed by the Sawtooth Interpretive & Historical Association and offers visitor info and educational programs.
Bonus “story layer” (great for kids):
Redfish Lake is named for the sockeye salmon that historically returned after a long journey; Recreation.gov notes the name comes from the lake shimmering red with fish, and that returning sockeye are now endangered, with many bred at the nearby hatchery.
Day 3: Drive to Sun Valley/Ketchum (scenic byway day)
The Sawtooth Scenic Byway is a classic road-trip segment with endless pull-offs and views.
Afternoon/evening in Ketchum: wander galleries, book a great dinner, and enjoy a slower pace.
Day 4: Sun Valley reset day (then head to Stanley for orientation OR fly home)
If you’re doing this as a pre-trip, you’ll drive back to Stanley in time for our orientation meeting. Visit Sun Valley notes Stanley is about a scenic 1-hour drive from Ketchum.
If you’re doing it as a post-trip, this is a great day for:
- a second museum visit,
- a long brunch,
- or one last easy ride on the Wood River Trail.
5-Day Itinerary: “The Classic Loop” (2 nights Sawtooths + 2 nights Sun Valley)
Best for: the best balance of wilderness + comfort without feeling rushed
Works as: pre- or post-trip
Day 1: Arrive Sun Valley/Ketchum
Settle in, eat well, early night.
Day 2: Culture + light adventure day
- Sun Valley Museum of Art (easy win, downtown Ketchum).
- Walk/bike the Wood River Trail.
Day 3: Drive to Stanley + Redfish Lake afternoon
- Stop at Redfish Lake viewpoints or the visitor center.
Day 4: Sawtooth Valley deep dive: hatchery + easy hike
- Sawtooth Fish Hatchery: Idaho Fish & Game notes it’s 5 miles south of Stanley, includes a visitor center, and offers seasonal tours (details vary by season).
Day 5: Buffer day for your river schedule
If pre-trip: keep it mellow and be ready for orientation.
If post-trip: this is an ideal “recovery day” (sleep in, long breakfast, slow walk, early dinner).
6-Day Itinerary: “Hike Big + Rest Big” (Sawtooth Lake + Sun Valley recovery)
Best for: active hikers who still want to arrive to the river fresh (or recover after)
Day 1: Arrive Stanley and acclimate
Short walk only, early bedtime.
Day 2: Sawtooth Lake day hike (iconic)
The Sawtooth Interpretive & Historical Association describes Sawtooth Lake as a popular hike with stats around 10 miles round trip and ~1800 ft gain, starting at Iron Creek Trailhead; it also notes you need a free wilderness permit and must follow wilderness regs.
Important wilderness reminders: The Forest Service posts Sawtooth Wilderness regulations (including dog leash rules in peak season and fire restrictions).
Day 3: Recovery day in Stanley (lake + interpretive stop)
- Redfish Visitor Center (programs / maps / exhibits).
- Optional soak: if you go hot-springing, follow posted rules and leave-no-trace practices (and always check current conditions).
Day 4: Transition to Sun Valley (comfort night)
Drive the byway, check into a comfortable hotel, dinner in Ketchum.
Day 5: Sun Valley “reset” day (art + easy movement)
- Sun Valley Museum of Art + Wood River Trail.
Day 6: Flex day (travel day or Stanley orientation day)
Use this day as your schedule buffer.
7-Day Itinerary: “The Full Central Idaho Vacation”
Best for: guests who want a true before/after trip experience (and room for weather)
This itinerary intentionally includes one “wildcard day” so you’re not stressed by afternoon storms, smoky skies, or simply finding a place you want to linger.
Day 1: Arrive Sun Valley/Ketchum
Easy evening, great meal, sleep.
Day 2: Wood River Valley explore day
- Wood River Trail (pick any segment).
- Add Sun Valley Museum of Art if you want a culture anchor.
Day 3: Silver Creek Preserve (wildlife + quiet)
The Nature Conservancy lists the Silver Creek Preserve as open to the public dawn to dusk and notes dogs are not allowed (plan accordingly).
Day 4: Drive to Stanley (Sawtooths basecamp)
Arrive mid-day, get settled.
Day 5: Redfish Lake + visitor center + optional easy hike
- Redfish Lake Visitor Center + programs.
- Redfish Lake’s sockeye story (helpful context for the region’s ecology).
Day 6: Wildcard day (choose your adventure)
Pick based on energy and conditions:
- another lake day,
- a shorter hike,
- hatchery visit,
- or simply rest and stargaze.
Day 7: Align with your river trip schedule
If pre-trip, this becomes your orientation day. If post-trip, this becomes your “sleep in, travel, fly home” day.
Don’t miss the night sky (yes, it’s that good here)
Central Idaho is home to an International Dark Sky Reserve designated in 2017, spanning 1,416 square miles (3,668 km²)—one reason our evenings in camp (and your evenings in Stanley) can feel unreal.
Visit Sun Valley also highlights that the area sits within the boundaries of America’s first Dark Sky Reserve.
Practical tip: Add a “no-screen” half hour before bed on your Stanley nights. Your eyes adjust, and the sky does the rest.
Add-on packing strategy (keep it simple)
One reason add-on travel is so easy with us: we provide an extensive on-river kit (sleep system, camp chairs, rafting gear, etc.), and we’ll issue river bags during orientation.
Our best packing approach for a Sawtooths + Sun Valley add-on
- Pack “town” clothes in a small separate cube (Sun Valley layers, a dinner outfit, travel shoes).
- Keep your river clothing system separate (quick-dry layers, warm layer, rain layer).
- If you’re on an itinerary that includes flights into the river, note that the trip details document mentions a 35 lb per person pack limit for flights into the Middle Fork.
For a fuller breakdown of what we provide and what you bring, our River 101 page is the best reference point.
Responsible travel notes (small details that make a big difference)
Sawtooths wilderness permits & rules
The Forest Service notes that the Sawtooth Wilderness requires a permit (with different processes depending on group size).
Sawtooth Wilderness regulations also include seasonal dog leash rules and fire restrictions.
Middle Fork wilderness norms (helpful context even for your add-on days)
Yes. Visit Sun Valley describes Stanley as a scenic ~1-hour drive from Ketchum, making it very realistic to pair the two.
We strongly recommend it for most guests. Our trip details note we typically return to Stanley around 5 PM (give or take an hour), and that many guests prefer to stay the return night and leave the next morning.
If you’re traveling in peak season: Stanley lodging. Our trip details emphasize that summer in Stanley is extremely busy and rooms go fast.
Often, yes. Visit Sun Valley notes that Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) has seasonal nonstop flights from multiple major cities (and publishes updates through their “Getting Here” info).
A classic combination is Redfish Lake + the Redfish Visitor Center (views, short walks, educational programming).
The Sawtooth Fish Hatchery is a great stop; Idaho Fish & Game describes its visitor center and seasonal tour opportunities.
Final planning note (how to pick the “right” itinerary in 30 seconds)
- Only 3 days? Do Sun Valley first, then Stanley for launch night.
- Want one big hike? Use the 6-day plan and do Sawtooth Lake early (not the day before orientation).
- Want luxury recovery after the river? Put Sun Valley on the back end and treat the first post-river night as a true rest day.
- Want a “vacation-vacation?” Choose the 7-day loop and keep one wildcard day for weather, naps, and stargazing.
If you tell us your trip dates and whether you’re flying into Boise or Sun Valley, we can help you choose the smoothest pre/post flow around our Stanley schedule.
