Middle Fork flows tell you how much water is moving past one point in the river, but a CFS number is not a complete trip forecast. The most useful public reference is the USGS Middle Fork Lodge gauge. It sits around river mile 61, so its reading describes the river near the middle of the permitted corridor—not the launch ramp or every rapid upstream and downstream.
The short version is simple: higher CFS generally means faster, deeper, more powerful water; lower CFS generally exposes more rocks and makes lines more precise. The same reading can still feel different depending on whether the river is rising or falling, where you are in the canyon, what boat you are in, and what changed upstream.

These are historical reference values, not operating limits or a forecast. MFRT calculated them from approved USGS daily mean discharge records for station 13309220 through September 2025. The station record includes April 1973–September 1981 and March 1999 onward. “Middle 50%” means half of the recorded daily values in that period fell between the two numbers shown; individual years can be well outside that band.
What does CFS mean?
CFS means cubic feet per second. It measures discharge: the volume of water passing a specific point each second. One CFS equals one cubic foot of water moving past the gauge per second. A reading of 1,000 CFS therefore represents 1,000 cubic feet passing that location every second.
Discharge is not the same as speed, depth, or difficulty. CFS reflects volume. Channel width, gradient, rocks, bends, tributaries, and constrictions determine how that volume behaves at a particular rapid.
The USGS does not continuously measure every cubic foot directly. It continuously measures water level, or gage height, then uses a site-specific relationship called a rating curve to estimate discharge. The agency’s streamgaging explanation describes how field measurements connect stage to streamflow.
That distinction matters because feet and CFS are related, but they are not interchangeable shorthand. A gauge height of 3 feet does not mean the river is 3 feet deep everywhere, and a conversion from feet to CFS can change when the channel or rating curve changes. Use the current values supplied by the gauge instead of relying on an old conversion table from a forum or screenshot.
Which Middle Fork gauge should you watch?
Use USGS station 13309220 at Middle Fork Lodge for the clearest public view of current Middle Fork discharge and gage height. The station is near river mile 61, drains approximately 1,042 square miles, and has a long—but discontinuous—period of record.
The Middle Fork Lodge location creates three important limits:
- It is not the put-in. Boundary Creek is roughly 61 river miles upstream, and Indian Creek is roughly 36 miles upstream.
- Tributaries change the number. Creeks add water between the launch and the gauge, so the reading is not the exact volume at Boundary Creek or Indian Creek.
- One number cannot describe 100 miles. A narrow rapid, broad pool, upper-river boulder garden, and lower canyon constriction can respond differently to the same overall flow.

How to read the gauge in four steps
- Confirm the station. Look for “MF Salmon River at MF Lodge near Yellow Pine, ID” and station number 13309220.
- Select discharge. On the USGS page, choose discharge in cubic feet per second rather than assuming the default graph is CFS.
- Check the trend. A reading of 2,000 CFS after several days of rapid rise can mean something different operationally from 2,000 CFS on a steady summer decline.
- Add context. Consider the gauge location, recent weather, launch point, tributaries, debris or access notices, and the trip-specific plan from MFRT.
For guided guests, the gauge is a way to understand the river—not a do-it-yourself go/no-go tool. A single reading cannot replace current observations and professional decisions about boats, route, group, weather, and access.
What different CFS bands tend to feel like
These bands are descriptive, not safety classifications. Transitions are gradual, and the number at Middle Fork Lodge does not create an invisible line where the whole river changes at once.
About 4,000 CFS and above: powerful and continuous
At higher discharge, current moves faster and carries more force. Some rocks disappear under deeper water, wave trains grow, and quiet recovery water between features can shrink. The ride often feels more continuous because the boat covers river miles quickly.
High flow can make a rocky line look cleaner while increasing the consequence of a missed move or swim. About 2,000–4,000 CFS: strong current and defined features
This transition band often combines substantial wave action with more visible definition between rapids. Guides may have more time to set up for a feature than at peak runoff, while the river still moves efficiently.
Do not interpret this as a universal “ideal” range. An individual rapid may become more complex as particular rocks and hydraulics emerge, and each year reaches the band on a different schedule.
About 1,000–2,000 CFS: lively and increasingly technical
As discharge falls, more rocks become part of the route. Channels narrow, moves become more deliberate, and a rapid can feel technical even when the overall current is slower. Guests may notice more distinct pools, eddies, and time to see the canyon between features.
This band commonly appears around July at the Middle Fork Lodge gauge, but historical daily values vary widely. For the named rapids and where they occur, use the Middle Fork mile-by-mile guide rather than treating a flow band as a rapid list.
Below about 1,000 CFS: lower, clearer, and precise
At lower flows, the river generally moves more slowly, more of the channel is visible, and loaded boats require precise lines through exposed rock features. “Lower” does not mean effortless. It shifts the work from high-volume force toward route finding, momentum management, and avoiding shallow obstacles.

Middle Fork CFS by month
Early June: the widest range and greatest variability
The historical median daily flow for June 1–15 is approximately 4,660 CFS, with the middle half of daily observations between about 3,080 and 6,810 CFS. Early June can also move far outside that range. Snowpack, the timing of warm weather, rain-on-snow events, and a rising or falling hydrograph all matter.
For guests, early June usually means the strongest current of MFRT’s operating season. It does not mean every early-June launch is automatically “high water,” and it does not tell you the water temperature, weather, or appropriate minimum age by itself.
Late June: the transition can happen quickly
For June 16–30, the historical median falls to approximately 2,770 CFS, with the middle half between about 1,840 and 4,310 CFS. That wide spread shows why the date alone is a weak predictor. One late-June trip may retain a high-water character while another year has already settled into more defined summer lines.
July: summer flow with meaningful year-to-year spread
The July historical median is approximately 1,210 CFS, and the middle half of recorded daily flows is about 900–1,720 CFS. The current typically continues to recede through the month, so July 2 and July 28 should not be treated as equivalent.

August: lower flow and more visible channel structure
The August historical median is approximately 730 CFS, with the middle half between about 590 and 910 CFS. Exposed rocks, narrower channels, and slower current make guide precision more visible to guests.
August can still include hot weather, cool mornings, smoke, storms, or changing water temperatures. Check the separate Middle Fork weather and water-temperature guide because discharge cannot answer those questions.
September: low-flow reference, not a promise of easy water
The September historical median is approximately 610 CFS, with the middle half between about 520 and 690 CFS. The river is often clear and relatively steady, but individual moves remain technical and remote-river consequences remain real.

Why lower CFS does not automatically mean easier
River difficulty is not a volume dial. Higher flow can make water faster, more powerful, and more continuous. Lower flow can expose obstacles, narrow usable channels, and demand more exact moves. Some features become harder as water rises; others become harder as it falls.
The Forest Service’s Middle Fork guidance describes the river as a moderate- to fast-paced whitewater experience requiring moderate to high skill depending on flow. It also warns that wildfire, debris flows, logjams, access, and other natural events can prevent a trip from proceeding as planned.
